The Branches of Foreign Banks in Taiwan See Steady Growth

The Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) stated that promoting the internationalization and liberalization of financial markets is its consistent policy goal. Currently there are 28 foreign banks that have established branches in Taiwan. Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk., Taipei Branch commenced business in 2021, whereas KEB Hana Bank Taipei Branch commenced service in 2022, indicating closer connection between Taiwan’s financial markets and the international community.

FSC indicates that as of end of 2022, branches of foreign banks in Taiwan held NT$3.90 trillion in total assets, and extended loans in the amount of NT$1.41 trillion, which register 26% and 5% growth respectively in comparison with NT$3.10 trillion and NT$1.34 trillion at the end of 2021. With their asset sizes growing continuously, no foreign banks report non-performing loans. So their overall asset quality is sound.

In the future, the FSC will continue to watch the financial and business status of branches of foreign banks in Taiwan and urge them to maintain solid asset quality and sound financial structure. On the other hand, the FSC will continue to build a friendly financial market environment, promote the internationalization and liberalization of our financial markets, and stay in line with international financial supervision guidelines. The FSC also welcomes qualified foreign banks to participate in our financial markets.
